By now most of us have heard about or experienced adaptogens in food and beverage. These “super herbs” recently are making their way into skincare products. But what exactly are adapotgens and how can they help your skin? While we are not doctors, continue reading for a general overview on the “what is” and “uses of”.

Adaptogens are an umbrella term for fungi and plant-derived compounds that help the body adapt to stress. Adaptogens have been used for hundreds of years in Ayurvedic healing practices but recently have become more accessible/accepted in the Western world. Adaptogens will not impacts a person’s experience of stressful events, but rather, are said to improve the way the body responds to physically to stress.  Studies suggest that adaptogens are effective because of how they regulate homeostasis, balance, via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) and the sympathoadrenal system – both of which are involved in the body’s stress response. Essentially they help teach your body how to reach equilibrium again, combating, anxiety, depression, fatigue and much more.

Below are some common adaptogens you will find in food, beverage and even some in Rei Skincare.

Ashwagandha – studied benefits include reducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation, supporting fertility and alleviating depression, stress and anxiety.

Licorice Root – not only a great flavor for candy; also known for alleviating stomach pain, protecting skin with antibacterial and antiviral properties, improving respiratory function by promoting healthy mucus production and anticancer effects.

Reishi Mushroom – A specific type of mushroom said to help promote sleep, be immunity bosting and help the body cope with stress including fighting fatigue.

Holy Basil – Studied benefits include helping to promote relaxation, relieve stress and anxiety, an anti-inflammatory, reduce cholesterol level and improve upper respiratory immunity.
